I mentioned that going to the barbershop was one of my quirky things that I like to do......
Now this may or may not seem weird, but I KNOW I am not alone in this...fellas back me up.
Going to the shop is like some sort of male ritual that gets passed on amongst Black men.
I can go as far as to even say it started when I was a shorty and my pops used to take me every two weeks. My earliest memory of getting a haircut was when I was about 8 or 9. We used to go to this guy that actually cut hair in a shop, but had so many customers that he had to cut hair out of his house on Sundays. Now I know at the shop I frequent currently from the moment you walk in there is a sense of brotherhood and camaraderie. Its a small shop and I have been going there for like 4 or 5 years. You can always count on a familiar face either waiting or in the chair, ESPN SportsCenter on the television, and the smell of Harold's Chicken coming from somewhere in the shop..lol. Now the guy I go to takes walk-ins as well as appointments so he is always busy. I learned when I first started going to that shop, its always best to make an appointment!! And yes ladies, us men go thru the same struggles when we find a barber that we like, we do try to hold on to them for dear life cause only he/she can get that razor line jjjuuussstt right...lol
Theres always a couple of older cats in the back of the shop near the shoe shine stand telling lies and playing checkers ( just like in the movie!!) . And theres the snack machine that always eats your money and the soda machine that you have to pay the real barber a dollar for and then he goes to the cash register to get the key to actually go inside the machine to retrieve your beverage..lol Ghetto Fabulous but true. I mean I have been going there like I said for awhile now and that machine has always been broken....I might ask about that the next time I am in there.
Man, come to think of it the prices of haircuts has skyrocketed in my 29yearsonthisEarth!!
I remember when both my dad and I were able to get a cut for 15 bucks and that included a nice tip!! Nowadays, 20 to 25 bucks for a cut and 5 bucks or so for a tip is the norm......
Well I just wanted to run down memory lane for a bit...I guess I need to give The MAN some quality time....since he is paying me...LOL
Until tomorrow....
